Questlove to Make Directorial Debut With ‘Black Woodstock’ (Exclusive)

Questlove to Make Directorial Debut With ‘Black Woodstock’ (Exclusive)
Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson will direct “Black Woodstock,” a feature documentary about the Harlem Cultural Festival, Variety has learned.

Held in 1969, the outdoor festival featured performances from some of the leading black musicians of the day — a group of heavy-hitters that includes Sly and the Family Stone, Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, B.B. King, the 5th Dimension, David Ruffin, Mahalia Jackson, the Staple Singers, and Gladys Knight and the Pips. The festival took place one year after the death of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, and was intended to celebrate African American culture and politics, as well as to promote black pride and unity.

It unfolded in Harlem’s Mount Morris Park during the same summer that Woodstock captured the attention of the world. Despite drawing over 300,000 people, the Harlem Cultural Festival received virtually no coverage from mainstream media, a staggering omission that Thompson’s film hopes to rectify. “Black Woodstock” will

Frozen 2 may have opened in theaters the weekend before Thanksgiving, but that didn’t keep Disney animated sequel from setting new box office records for the holiday weekend. Seven Ways to Produce an Oscar Contender, From ‘The Irishman’ to ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’
It’s so easy to make a bad movie, and so hard to produce a great one. Two producers this year each managed the rare feat of producing not one, but two movies that are in the race for 2020 Oscars. Emma Tillinger Koskoff produced Martin Scorsese’s big-budget period epic “The Irishman” as well as Todd Phillips’ “Joker,” while David Heyman supported two writer-directors, Quentin Tarantino and Noah Baumbach, with sprawling showbiz mosaic “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and bicoastal tug-of-war divorce drama “Marriage Story,” respectively. All required a range of skills learned over many years, not least of which is knowing when to say no, and when to say yes.

“A producer is only as good as the director you work with,” Heyman told IndieWire. “You can make a great film with a great director, but you can’t make a great film with a bad director.”

      1. Hitch yourself to an A-list director.

‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’: Quentin Tarantino Channels ‘Night of the Living Dead’ at the Spahn Ranch
Quentin Tarantino’s bittersweet intersection of fact and fiction in “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” takes a creepy turn when introducing the hippie Manson Family, who lived at the rundown Spahn Movie Ranch during the lead up to the infamous Sharon Tate murders in August, 1969. Naturally, Tarantino couldn’t resist riffing on “Night of the Living Dead.”

“What’s neat — and I can’t truly take credit for it — is just the mise-en-scene,” Tarantino told IndieWire’s Anne Thompson. “It’s the production design [by Barbara Ling]. One of the best sets I ever had of any of my movies was rebuilding the Spahn Ranch. And we did a wonderful job casting those gals. It’s scary and it is creepy. We’re not doing anything to make anything scary or creepy, it just is. It’s a wonderful alchemy we captured and I didn’t break the mood.”

The Future of ‘Alita’ Sequel: Producer Jon Landau Says Fans Must Show Disney There’s Demand

The Future of ‘Alita’ Sequel: Producer Jon Landau Says Fans Must Show Disney There’s Demand
Robert Rodriguez’s “Alita: Battle Angel” surprised the box office earlier this year with a $404 million worldwide gross. The 20th Century Fox manga adaptation turned out not to be the massive box office bomb many in the industry predicted it would be, and its final haul left the door slightly open for a sequel. Then the Disney-Fox merger closed, making “Alita” one of the final Fox releases and putting a big question mark on a potential sequel. The fate of the next “Alita” film is in Disney’s hands, and producer Jon Landau says fans need to make sure Disney hears their wishes.

“What I think the Alita Army should do is keep peppering our family now at Disney and [let them know] how important it is to have another Alita movie,” Landau recently told CinemaBlend. “Hopefully we’ll venture there one day.”

Alita: Battle Angel” was set up at Fox

The Best Overlooked TV Performances of the Decade
There are so many elements of a great TV show that it’s sometimes hard to recognize when one is so vital that its absence would collapse the series around it. It can be a vital music cue, a key costume, or a well-placed prop.

Very often, though, it’s a performance. A sturdy pillar that allows the flashier pieces to flourish, the quiet heartbeat that gives life to its surroundings.

So, as part of our ongoing efforts to salute the standout work of this past decade, we each picked a handful of performances we thought deserved a second look. Often, it’s a single entry from a prolific 10 years spent in front of the camera. In all cases, these are roles that deserved more fanfare than they received.

Our only criteria: no performances that got Emmy nominations and there could only be one selection per show. (Both made these

Sgiff: Japanese Auteur Miike Takeshi on Violence and Yakuza Love Stories
Japanese auteur Miike Takeshi delivered an entertaining masterclass to a packed audience as part of the Singapore International Film Festival on Sunday, where he held forth on a range of subjects. Conducting the masterclass was Singaporean filmmaker Kirsten Tan (“Pop Aye”).

A day earlier, Miike received an honorary award from the festival.

In a career spanning some 30 years, Miike has directed more than a 100 movies and TV shows. He attributes his prolific output to his years as an assistant director where he apprenticed with the likes of Shohei Imamura and Toshio Masuda and learnt to maximise the time and limited budget allocated for a film in the most efficient manner. “Even now, when we are having lunch at the location, when the crew and actors are having a luxurious meal, I think I can use this time to make a short TV commercial,” said Miike.

      Miike’s latest film “First Love

‘The Farewell’ Breakout Zhao Shuzhen Helped Keep the Film’s Secret From Lulu Wang’s Grandmother
One of the breakout performances of 2019 comes from an actress who’s been in the business for more than 60 years. After starring in countless TV shows and movies in her native China, Zhao Shuzhen is poised to become a household name among indie filmgoers and awards voters with her supporting turn as a grandmother who doesn’t know she has cancer in Lulu Wang’s summer sleeper “The Farewell.”

“I’ve played women that are angry, very obsessive, mad women. I’ve played grandmothers who are very nice and warm and optimistic,” Shuzhen told IndieWire via a translator in a recent interview. That’s who she plays in “The Farewell,” a stand-in for director Wang’s own real-life grandmother — or Nai Nai, as they’re called in Chinese parlance — who, to this day, still doesn’t know she has cancer. Awkwafina leads the film as a version of Wang, seen
